Rays of Sunlight – June 2018

Wow, we’re almost halfway through the year! Time definitely does fly. I have a handful of new post ideas in my head, but today, it’s far too hot for a complicated post. Instead, I’m going to share my positives, or rays of sunlight, for the month of June.

1. Summer. The weather is still beautiful. I heard on the radio that we broke a record for heat the second quarter of 2018. My husband also said that the weather institute predicts a very wet summer. I’m hoping not, since for everything other than complicated blog post writing, this weather is great (although my husband thinks otherwise).

2. Going for walks. According to my Fitbit activity tracker, I reached the recommendded step goal of 10,000 daily several times this month. Of course, that isn’t nearly good enough, as it’s a recommended daily goal, but I’m still enjoying competing with myself.

3. Going to a spa with my sister. Back in February or March, my sister said she’d like to take me to some kind of spa someday in June when her husband would be on a business trip. This day came round June 18. We went to a spa called Sanadome in Nijmegen, which has a lot of scentsy baths, bubble baths and warm swimming pools. I loved it. My sister paid, as this was an early birthday gift for me. Afterwards, we went out for dinner at my favorite restaurant, which I discovered when I was hospitalized in Nijmegen back in 2008. Unfortunately, they no longer had my favorite, turkey, on the menu.

4. My birthday. Yay, I turned 32 on Wednesday! I’m still often pretty excited about my birthday and becoming a year older, even though with each year I come closer to old age. As I had already seen my sister when we went to the spa, she didn’t visit on my birthday. My parents did though. We went for a long walk (one of the days I reached 10,000 steps). After that, we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Doetinchem, a city about twenty minutes from my home.

5. BBQ’ing with my in-laws. I don’t know whether it was for my birthday (just let me think it was) or some other reason, but my mother-in-law invited us over yesterday. The previous day I’d been stuffed after the Mexican dinner, but I still enjoyed the food yesterday. Don’t ask me about my weight.

6. Kindle. Yes, I have to mention it again. In early May, I bought my first book on Kindle, which I’m slowly moving through. This month though, I rediscovered foster care and inspirational memoirs. I decided to buy one and flew through it. I’ll likely post a review in a few days.

7. Visiting potential new day activities. I will likely write a separate post on this, but let me say that I might finally have found a place that’s suitable. We’re moving slowly and I won’t make any final decisions until we’ve spoken with the Center for Consultation and Expertise consultant. That meeting has been set for July 31.

8. Depression finally lifting. I’m still not feeling overly happy, but at least I can say I’m no longer depressed. I am so glad my increased antidepressant dose hasn’t caused any side effects either.

Gratitude List: Week Starting June 1, 2015

Gratitude lists are a great way to look at the positives in your life. I love reading them. Though I’ve done a few positivity lists, I never called them gratitude lists. They are pretty mucht he same, but I love the word “gratitude”. Here goes my gratitude/positivity list for the week starting June 1, 2015.


  1. Lots of new blog engagement. I was quite satisfied with my blog posts this week, so decided to promote them. I received quite a few comments and got many new visitors. Thanks all!

  2. Been very much inspired to write. Today is an exception, but thinking of things to be grateful for takes inspiration too.

  3. Been very motivated to reach my June goals. For example, I’ve been learning a few new yoga poses.

  4. Finally discontinued my harsh spam filter on my E-mail, which was blocking a lot of legit E-mail with no way to change it. The amount of spam did increase, but not too badly, and I did finally receive GoodReads E-mails. These have been very inspiring.

  5. Speaking of GoodReads, I’ve joined a few interesting groups. I hadn’t taken part on GoodReads in years, but now am very much inspired to join some reading circles.

  6. Finally started reading Unspeakable by Abbie Rushton, which came out in Ffebruary and which I bought right then but never got round to reading. It’s a great book so far.

  7. The weather was beautiful today and yesterday. Today, it was quite hot (like, around 30_C) and right now, there’s a thunderstorm going over my town. I loved sitting in the garden this afternoon and I also for some reason love the sound of the thunderstorm.

  8. I bought some nice new skirts on Monday and wore one of them today.

  9. Went to the bakery stand this morning. They always have a stand right outside of the institution on Friday mornings. Bought croissants and oh, they’re so delicious!

  10. Had my hair cut yesterday. It’s quite a bit shorter now and I must say I like it better this way.

  11. Heard from the autism center consultant today. She had contacted several autism support agencies and one of them did say they can possibly guide me in my wish to live with my husband and investigate what I’ll need.

  12. I had a meeting with a woman from another unit at my institution who wants to volunteer for a blind person. She had tried to volunteer at the local blindneess institution but ran into bureaucratic issues there, so it was suggested that she volunteer for me. I think I liked meeting with her. She’ll come round to my unit on Wednesday to see if she can read me the institution newsletter or something else or we can go for a walk.

Overall, today I’m in an okay mood. I did worry a lot about the autism center recommendations and the possibility of me moving in with my husband last night. Today, I am relatively able to let go of these worries.

Three Things I Like About Myself

Day three of the recovery challenge is a hard one, because it is about listing three things you like about yourself. I can think of things I maybe, in a way, sort of, kind of like about myself, but most come with a huge “but”. Then again, this post is good for examining why I can’t really like positive characteristics of mine.

I had to do this once before during counseling at blindness rheab, and I also had to ask my parents and sister to name three qualities about me. They didn’t need to be positive per se, but it would be nice if they were. The first thing my father came up with was my intelligence, and I bet my mother had a hard time thinking of something other than that to come up with first. I realize I am intelligent, and in a way, I like it. I used to like being seen as a “walking encyclopedia”. At family get-togethers, I was usually popular for my calendar calculation abilities and knowledge of politics. For clarity’s sake: I actually know the mechanism behind calendar calculation and don’t have the huge memory that savants do have, so I’m generally a lot slower than savant people. Now, I still feel good when I debate a topic I know a lot about and I can show my knowledge.

The reason intelligence has a bad connotation to me is because of the expectations that go with it. Because I am intelligent, I am supposed to function well in a lot of other areas. This is not true – conditions like autism, which I have, have little to do with intelligence and can affect intelligent people significantly. But this myth has still been perpetuated throughout my life.

Another quality I mentioned to the blindness rehabilitation psychologist is my strong-willedness. If I want something, I’m determined to get my way. This may be annoying to others, but most people appreciate it in me. I also don’t usually truly give up easily. I may say that I will give up, but in the edn, I persevere.

Then there is the one quality I truly like about myself: my creativity. I don’t necessarily mean that I make good crafts, although I’m quite happy with many recent projects. I also mean my writing skill and my generally open-minded thinking style. “Openness” is the one thing on the five-factor personality test that I score high on (except for “neuroticism”, but I mean the positive qualities), although I must say I am pretty conscientious too.

To end this post, I’m stealing an idea from Confessions of a Single Parent Pessimist and listing three things I did well this week:


  1. Have not binged during the week and have not self-harmed in seven weeks.

  2. Kept my temper in check.

  3. Wrote a lot of blog posts that I like.

Positives for the Week

I am feeling a bit stressed out after my computer started acting up again – not as in it being broken, just as in having a hiccup. I am also missing out on inspiration for my #Mumslist post this week, because I haven’t been online much. I thought I’d put these two frustrations to good use and make a list of positives of the week.


  1. Made not just two but five loom bracelets this week. Am working on a sixth one. The above pic shows a bracelet I made for a nurse.
  2. With today being the exception, the weather has been quite nice over the past week.

  3. I reached my goal of going to the gym this week. Did buy candy more than once though. I did have a binge eating episode on Friday, but let’s just consider that a slip up.

  4. The nurses made delicious macaroni for us yesterday. Had a delicious ice cream on Tuesday.

  5. Both of my computers are usually fuctioning again.

  6. Made phone calls to my mother and sister. My sister, who earned her Master’s in history a few weeks ago, got word that she may be accepted into teacher education after all.

And here are my goals for the upcoming week.


  1. Make a Christmas card for a swap I’m on. Yeah, cardmakers make and sometimes swap Christmas cards all year.

  2. Start working on an art doll for a mixed media swap. I don’t really know what an art doll is, but one of the usual activity staff will be back from vacation this week so I can ask her for inspiration.

  3. Go to the gym again.

  4. Write one original blog post (so something other than Tuesday Ten, Word of the Week, etc.).
